MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 12, 2019–WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has featured some of the most dramatic moments, for better or worse, for Ford Chip Ganassi Racing. Now the team seeks to notch one more checkmark in the “better” column this weekend on the Central California coast.
Laguna Seca was site of the very first win for Ford GT, when driver Richard Westbrook took a perfect long-haul fuel economy run all the way to the top step of the podium with co-driver Ryan Briscoe. It was the perfect jump-start of momentum Ford CGR needed before its first trip to the Le Mans 24, which it won in GTLM.
“Laguna Seca is a good track for me, personally,” Westbrook said. “I have a good record racing there. As a team, we’re looking to close out the season with a few more podiums, so it’s a good time to go back.”
Last year was less lucky for Ford CGR. Dirk Müller, who started on the outside of row one after qualifying p2, was collected by an accident at the green flag – a terrible turn of events that sent the No. 66 he shares with hometown favorite Joey Hand to the garage. Later in the race, contact with another car sent the No. 67 to the garage for repairs. The No. 66 and 67 finished seventh and sixth, respectively.
“Laguna Seca hasn’t always been good to us, but it’s a track we really love,” Müller said. “The Corkscrew (five-story drop at turn eight) is so fun to drive in this Ford GT and all of Joey’s friends and family come to watch. We love to see all the fans who come out and we want to give them a good show.”
